Watertown & Oakville, CT Naturalization Info
US naturalizations were done in local courts in Connecticut. Watertown and Oakville residents typically went to the District Court of Waterbury although it was in a different county (New Haven vs. Litchfield). Several years ago the naturalization records were moved from the local courts and centralized in regional centers.
In the Connecticut state library in Hartford are microfilms of the card files that were used to index the records. These records are in Soundex order for the last name. On those cards are the persons name, date of naturalization, sometimes the date of immigration, and the reference to the record that is needed to get a copy (the volume and page number, and the district).
The Waltham MA, NARA office has the naturalization records for individuals who were naturalized in Connecticut. There are usually two items in the file; the application and, 5 years later, the declaration of citizenship. The information on the records will vary as to the amount of genealogical data on them. Generally the information is not that much. But if you want a copy, submit a check or money order for a fee of $10.00 ONLY, made payable to the National Archives Trust Fund. The address is:
National Archives-Northeast Region,
380 Trapelo Road,
Waltham, MA 02452.
