Newspapers in and around Watertown, CT

Several newspapers covered Watertown throughout the years.  Listed here are ones that may help researchers find genealogy data.

 

            The Post  1881.        One issue, Volume 1, dated Dec.3, 1881 is on microfilm at the Connecticut state library in Hartford, CT.

            Watertown Journal  1888  One issue, Vol. III No.3 dated Sept. 12, 1888 is on microfilm at the Connecticut state library in Hartford, CT.

            Watertown News  1913 - 1929  This paper, from April 1, 1913 through Sept. 27, 1929, is on microfilm at the Connecticut state library in Hartford, CT.  It covers news of the town as well as national and worldwide items.  No obituaries were noted in several editions that were reviewed.  Articles and photos of prominent persons in town are in the paper.  There was significant coverage of the First World War with many servicemen's pictures.

           The Town Times  1947 - Present    A local weekly paper that is still in existence.

           The Waterbury Evening Democrat   12-5-1887 to 12-1925     Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT and at the state library.

           The Waterbury Democrat   1-1926 to 12-1946   Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT and at the state library.

           The Waterbury American Weekly Edition  12-1844 to 12-1865   Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT and at the state library.

           The Waterbury Daily American   5-22-1866 to 12-1888  Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT and at the state library.

           The Waterbury American   1-1889 to 3-1990    An evening paper.  Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT. and at the state library.   Watertown obituaries are known to be in this paper.

           The Waterbury Republican  1-1884 thru Present   A morning paper that is still published today.  Copies are on microfilm at the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, CT and at the state library.  Watertown obituaries are in this paper, they were different than the American ones during the period that the two papers co-existed.  Check both when doing research.

            Note that the Waterbury American and the Waterbury Republican merged in April 1990 and the combined paper is called the Waterbury Republican.
